Ian Trout co-founded Strategic Studies Group in 1983 with Roger Keating. Trout a keen wargamer and military history dilettante was the proprietor of Napoleon Military Bookshop renowned for its fine selection of board games and role playing games. It was Trout’s love of board games that influenced SSG first game “Reach for The Stars“. 

Trout’s deep knowledge of military history and strategy design expertise ensured veracity to SSG’s games that won the respect of dedicated wargamers. He was responsible for the publishing side of SGG, building on his knowledge and networks established running the bookshop. Drawing on the editorial expertise of his own father, who was a newspaper typesetter, Trout oversaw the writing and design of SSG’s game manuals to ensure that players could get the information they needed to get  most out the games. To further this idea he began publishing a quarterly magazine for SSG “Run5” for which he penned many articles on the historical backgrounds on SSG games and authored strategic scenarios, enticing players back to SSG games for another play through.

After nearly thirty years designing the games he wanted to play Ian Trout passed away in 2011.
