Duke Nukem on Game Boy Color is a side-scrolling platformer and shooter by Torus Games. During a television interview promoting his new book, hyper-macho hero Duke Nukem is abducted by a nefarious alien race called the Zorgonites. Carnage ensues as he fights to defeat their Emperor and make his way back to Earth across the game’s sixteen levels. An arsenal of shotguns, machine guns, flamethrowers, rocket launchers, tank vehicles, and more are used, honing in on the adrenaline and bloodshed that the series was known for. The game also featured a built-in battery pack that allowed players to save their progress at any point in the level. This was a novel feature when most Game Boy games only allowed saving at the end of a level.
Version Information
Duke Nukem is a Game Boy Color port of the PC MS-DOS game Duke Nukem 2 by Apogee Software from 1993. When announcing the port in a 1999 press release, marketing director of publisher GT Interactive, Tony Kee, declared that “Your Game Boy is about to become a man.” The Game Boy Color version was almost a different game, with significant changes made to the level, weapon, and enemy designs. The graphics and sprite detail were also simplified to meet the Game Boy Color hardware capabilities. While Game Boy ports were often less valued for this reason, Torus mostly received critical praise for their adaptions that successfully recaptured the game in the handheld format.
