The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) on Game Boy was released as a Christmas-time tie-in to the Jurassic Park sequel of the same name shown in cinemas earlier that year. Based on the film’s plot, players travel to the Isla Sorna where they are tasked with preventing smugglers from the nefarious corporation BioSyn from extracting and exploiting the remaining dinosaurs on the island. Players traverse forests, caves, and laboratories over the game’s eight levels. The levels are presented as 2D platformers with enemies to defeat and collectibles needed to advance the quest. In addition to BioSyn enemies and deadly flora, players also encounter several dinosaurs from the films like the iconic velociraptor or the towering tyrannosaurus. Larger enemies must be avoided while smaller foes can be attacked with guns and grenade launchers, or punches and kicks if out of ammo.
The Game Boy version was developed by Torus Games, who in the 1990s worked on several licensed property tie-ins and ports to handheld, including Disney’s The Lion King, DragonHeart, and Stargate. The low Australian dollar against the US and many other currencies made Australian studios like Torus attractive for outsourcing, though the budgets and timeframes—usually for Christmas—were tight.
Version Information
Several different versions of The Lost World: Jurassic Park were developed in 1997. The Sega and PlayStation versions were the same, while there were four distinct games developed for different handheld consoles: the Game Gear, R-Zone, Tiger’s game.com, and the Game Boy. Each draw on elements from the film.
