Developed in line with the NBC’s broadcasting of the NBA, NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC was brought to the Game Boy Color by Torus Games in early 2000. NBA Showtime features 2D two-on-two basketball games in Season, Exhibition, Playoffs, and Practice modes. 29 teams are included with players representing the 1999–2000 season. Following the NBA jam series’ unusual and over-the-top elements, NBA Showtime includes show-stopping dunks, turbo mode, injuries, and an unlockable jungle setting.
Torus’ game also includes an unlockable Melbourne basketball team named after the studio and featuring Torus artists Andrew McIntosh and Tyshan Carey, digitised as players. Midway, the game’s publisher, is also featured as a fictional team from San Diego. These continue NBA Jam‘s tradition of including unconventional secret characters, from Mortal Kombat characters to Hillary Clinton.
Version Information
The Game Boy Color port was adapted from the PlayStation, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and Arcade versions of the game, all released in 1999. The console versions also operated on a 2D-plane but were released with 3D sprites using motion capture technology. The Game Boy Color hardware though required a simplification of the graphics to 2D.
