Mary King’s Riding Star is an equestrian simulator released in 1999 by IR Gurus (later called Transmission Games). Players take part in horse riding tournaments across dressage, show jumping, and cross country events, competing against the program or a friend in 2-player mode. Players also must take care of their horse, including brushing and feeding their horse, and sweeping the stable. The game was conceptualised when two long-time friends Andrew Niere and Craig Laughton wanted to make a game for Laughton’s younger sister enrolled in pony club. They received some funding from Victoria’s Cinemedia and were later supported by UK publisher Midas Interactive Entertainment. Niere and Laughton carried out extensive research into the equestrian world when developing the game.
Version Information
Mary King’s Riding Star is an updated version of Riding Star first released on Windows in 1998. Riding Star was conceptually lead by entrepreneurs Andrew Niere and Craig Laughton and was developed with Blue Tongue Entertainment, who loaned artists and programmers for the game. It was self-published and self-distributed by Niere and Laughton. Soon after Riding Star‘s release they partnered with UK publisher Midas Interactive Entertainment, who funded the game’s translation and localisation across Europe, as well as its port to the Playstation. Under Midas, it was rebranded Mary King’s Riding Star. Niere and Laughton partnered with Tantalus Media to create the port and update the assets for localisation.
